[CBC뉴스] 영국 베드포드셔 (Bedfordshire)가 4단계 제한에 진입함에 따라 ZSL Whipsnade 동물원에 방문객은 입장을 할 수 없다.
하지만 코뿔소에게 크리스마스를 맞이해 특별한 먹이가 제공되었다.
WWF에 따르면 '인도 코뿔소'로도 알려져 있는 이 동물원의 큰 뿔 코뿔소 무리와 가장 큰 코뿔소 종들은 바나나 잎 한 접시에 담긴 야채를 먹었다. 그들은 당근, 양배추, 그리고 큰 건초 더미를 포함했는데, 바나나 잎은 달콤한 간식이었다.
ZSL Whipsnade Zoo might be closed to visitors, as Bedfordshire, England, UK enters Tier 4 restrictions, but that did not stop its rhinos tucking into a festive feast in true Christmas spirit.
The zoo's greater one-horned rhino herd, also known as the 'Indian rhino' and the largest of the rhino species, according to the WWF, ate its vegetables that were presented on a plate of banana leaves. They included carrots, cabbage and a big pile of hay, with the banana leaves being a sweet treat.
At least one youngster in the UK this Christmas was guaranteed to eat her greens.
"Unlike many parents, Behan has no trouble getting her little one to eat the Christmas veg on her plate. Zhiwa particularly enjoys the carrots because she can playfully toss them around before crunching on them," said team leader Mark Holden, one of the zookeepers.
"Our not-so-little one weighs more than forty times the average toddler at 500 kg (78.5 stone) and eats over four tonnes of greens a year. Santa certainly delivered for the rhino-ho-ho this year and maybe some children will be inspired by Zhiwa's love of veg," he added.
Although Whipsnade Zoo's doors are closed to the public, in accordance with UK government guidance during the coronavirus pandemic, zookeepers, vets, and essential staff continue to go to work every day, including Christmas Day, to ensure the zoo's animals are well cared for this festive season - as well as making sure they eat a varied diet.
