A rescue operation in Kenya has successfully saved a number of giraffes stranded on an island after heavy rains caused flooding.
The Rothschild's giraffes - a rare breed with only about 3,000 left in Africa, 800 of them in Kenya - were in danger of drowning.
Levels on Lake Boringo in western Kenya had risen considerably after relentless rains and the giraffes had nowhere to go.
But conservationaists from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) in collaboration with the United States-based Save Giraffes Now and Kenya's Northern Rangelands Trust joined forces to mount a rescue operation.
They used a custom-made steel barge to transport the first of the giraffes four miles to its new home, a 4,400-acre fenced sanctuary within the 44,000-acre Ruko Conservancy.
The move to Ruko will give the animals protection from poachers and predators.
