According to the old Farmers Almanac website, it has also been referred to as the 'Long Night Moon', by the native American Mohican tribe, as it is closest to the winter solstice and will shine above the horizon for longer than most full moons.
In the coastal town of Rafina near Athens, the full moon added a special touch to the Christmas light decorations in the town square.
