After over a 16-month pregnancy, six-year-old female Marusia gave a birth to a baby rhino which is yet to be named. Still tripping over her feet, a week-old female baby rhino is the latest addition to Wroclaw Zoo in western Poland.
It is the first successful birth of this rare species in the zoo's 155-year history. Radoslaw Ratajczak, chairman of Wroclaw Zoo's board, said the zoo was lucky to get a rhino calf after the first match and added that matching rhinos requires strong nerves as they first need to wrestle and fight prior to copulation.
"When you have two masses of about two tonnes then it gets noisy in the paddock," Ratajczak said. The zoo says there are less than 3,000 Indian rhinos left in the wild occurring in small protected areas of Nepal and India.
