Christmas arrived early in central Thailand on Wednesday (December 23), with elephants wearing Santa hats and giant face masks handing out masks to primary school students.
Four mahouts decked in Santa Claus-styled robes arrived on the backs of Santa-hat-clad elephants in front of a school in Ayutthaya province. They brought with them more than 500 face masks to promote COVID-19 awareness amid rising cases in Thailand.
"I'm a little bit excited and a little bit sad because the elephants cannot go into the school," said 12-year-old student, Pacharamon Sukphiromsanti, who came out to greet the elephants at the gate.
In previous pre-COVID years, elephants and mahouts would walk around the school to hand out wrapped presents ranging from candy to toys as part of pre-Christmas festivities. But this year, they were not allowed in the school gates.
Thailand reported 46 new coronavirus infections, of which 39 were locally transmitted cases found in several different provinces.
